ST., ZBROJOVKA, BRNO, and was chosen, as many former Imperial rifles of this type were on hand and the facility was rebuilding unserviceable specimens which had been collected. Progress was made to the point that new Mannlicher rifles of the Imperial Model 1895 in 8x50mm were being made by 1920, 5000 being produced in 1921 and production of the Mannlicher is believed to have continued until about the summer of 1921. Even before the Empire had formally capitulated, a small arms workshop was set up in a former Imperial Army Artillery Arsenal in Brno, which was in the middle of Moravia, to provide rifles to the new Czechoslovakia. It was dominated by the Czechs of Bohemia. A state was formed out of Bohemia, Slovakia, Moravia, Ruthenia and the Sudetenland.

The serial number is GR 17xxx, so that makes it approximately a 1938, right? Or am I off here? No, there's no lion+year marked on the receiver. Now that I got your attention, I have a question, and technically I didn't mislead you: I am talking about dating a Romanian.Mine has seen quite a bit more wear on the metal than yours, yet has similar wood and no cleaning rod. Wow, that is the nicest finish on a Romanian contract VZ-24 that I have ever seen (the YR in front of the serial number denotes a Romanian contract rifle).I'm not an expert on Vz 24 serial numbers, but wouldn't a Romanian contract build have an 'R' serial prefix of some sort?

The Japanese Naval use of these rifles is well documented, they armed landing parties from ships and the very Famous Special Naval Landing forces, the Japanese Marines.

This is one of those very rare rifles, and they are confirmed to have been entirely shipped solely to the Imperial Japanese Navy and no other attribution has been found. These rifles are identified by the “ P” suffix serial number, however there was a special group of rifles that were produced at Brno’s Bystrica Factory and they are marked with a “C” suffix only on the stock.

The Famous Czech Firm of Brno had large numbers of Vz24 Rifles on hand for export and they were actively selling them to both the Nationalist Chinese Government and later to the Japanese Navy and also to Several European Nations such as Romania and Slovakia. In the late 1930’s the Japanese Navy was forced to source the small arms it needed from Europe because the Japanese Army was allocated everything the Home Arsenal’s could produce for the war in China. This is certainly the finest example of an all matching totally untouched Japanese Navy purchased and issued Czech Brno Export Model Vz24 very rare “C” Prefix serial range 1937 dated Service Rifle that we have ever seen.
